HALKI ISLAND GREECE : REGION DODECANESE ISLANDS
Halki (Chalki - Xalki) is Part of the Dodecanese group of islands and just a few miles west of Rhodes, lies the wonderful island of Halki also known as the 'Center of Peace and Friendship'. Halki being only 28sq.km and with only one village, a couple of roads, a handful of cars and no disco's. On the island of Halki, you are guaranteed a truly relaxing 'away from it all' holiday
The island of Halki has no airport and therefore requires a flight to Rhodes with onward transfers. The ferry service is operated by two alternating boats, leaving for Halki each day in the season from Kamiros Skala, a small port on the Western coast of Rhodes. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Halki is also served by ferry companies connecting the island with Rhodes and Piraeus. The sailing time to is around 2 hours, into the commercial harbour near the Old Town and continues to Piraeus.
The island of Halki was much allied with it's neighbouring island of Rhodes, especially during the Peloponnesian War of 412BC. Centuries later saw the island occupied by several successors, notably the Arabs in the 7th Century and later the Venetians. These invasions let to the building of the medieval fortresses on the island. Halki was then controlled by the Turks, beginning in 1523 and lasting until the Greek War of Independence in 1821.
In Halki(Chalki - Xalki) beaches surround the island of Halki, some approachable by foot, others by small boats. Pondamos, Ftengaia, Yiali and Kania are the only ones reached by foot.
